Medicinal plants, also called medicinal herbs, were discovered back in prehistoric times and used in folk medicine. Plants synthesize hundreds of chemical compounds for functions such as repellent of insects, fungi, diseases and herbivorous mammals. Many phytochemicals with potential or proven biological activity have been identified. However, since one plant contains very different phytochemicals, the effect of using the whole plant as a cure is unclear. In addition, the phytochemical content and pharmacological effects, if any, of many plants with medicinal potential have been overlooked as a result of careful scientific research to determine efficacy and safety.
